Art theft is not a crime - say NO to copyrightToday, a DD was awarded to a nice acrylic painting (below left) which was painted from my photo (below right) -
Just about the only thing I don't like about is the strong cyan tint, which seems to be more associated with the photo of the painting rather than then painting itself. Overall it's definitely one of the best derivative works I've yet to see based on my photos. I really enjoyed exploring how all the little details differed between the two.
Rpriet1 did not ask for my permission, or inform me of using my photo. A DA gallery moderator just messaged to ask whether I would like the deviation removed, and the DD revoked. I think most artists who've had their work "stolen" would be outraged, but for me the answer was a very unambiguous no. This is a complicated issue, and I think that the vast majority of the readers will disagree with me at this point, so let me explain my position carefully.
The concept of intellectual property, the way it ex
Mistaking pornography and artistic nudityA.k.a. Deviantart admins FAIL again.
This is not the first time that they do.
Today I was browsing around on deviantart searching for some "shower" pictures to get ideas for a project. And I found this: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&global=1&q=showering#/d2gysln
Anyhow I see it, it's not what the "artist" says about what it is. Soap MY ASS. There is a HUGE gap in between artistic nudity and pornographic content. THIS http://browse.deviantart.com/photography/people/nude/?order=9 is artistic nudity.
I wanted to report it but the report button said:
Case Log: Explicit Pornography
First Report: Sun Mar 28 2010 04:36
Case Closed: Wed Aug 17 2011 00:04
Comment: Thank you for your report. A member of our staff has reviewed the deviation but has found that it does not meet the current official definition for "pornography" which is in use. Please remember that while this image might meet your own personal definition for "pornography", your personal view and
Women ArtistsThe other day, I attempted to put together a huge list of some professional and semi-pro women artists over on my tumblr, because it seems like too often women get overlooked when it comes to being honored and recognized. This year, I was incredibly honored to be nominated for a Hugo award in the Best Professional Artist category, but I was a little shocked to find out there hadn’t been another woman nominated in that category since Rowena Morrill in 1986. That’s more than a little ridiculous, considering there are so many women artists out there who are all amazing, who offer unique points of view and design solutions, and who need more visibility and recognition. While putting this list together, I was really excited to find tons of new artists I'd never heard of before.

Dude- why not just take a photo and call it done! When I download a drawing like my latest eye study I get some of this, and it's a good question and one that needs to be thought through by every realist.
"Hello, I'm doing some research (not very scientific, I just need some opinions) on photo-realism and I'd like to ask you a question if you don't mind: "why not simply take a photograph or use a 3D program"?
That's a great question and a realist has to answer this for him or herself, If copying without change, construction and re-invention, be it form a photograph or from life, then the creative process is not addressed, in this case I agree there is a useless element about it, it becomes a fundamental exercise at best. There is nothing wrong with these exercises if it improves your knowledge and skills as a technician. But if your aim is only to draw like "a photo", I'm afraid you will never attain what "art" has to offer. Also I think too many photo-realists rely on technical eye candy alone, with no
More Critical Thoughts on Art School + Career PathHey everyone, thanks for the info on San Francisco for those who live in / near there. It's a big thing for me to still be thinking about, so I'll definitely be coming in for a visit before I make any final decisions.
Elsewhere, I've been meaning to do a short rant dealing with how I feel retrospectively having gone to art school. I've talked about having gone before, and I've given some advice about choosing a school that's right for you should you choose to go. But you know, having been out for a couple years now, there are a few glaring problems I see not just from the school I attended, but apparently from many schools nationwide. And this deals with offering students a clear path of study for the often specialized career they are looking to get into. Areas of art such as (concept) design, animation, comics/storyboarding/sequential, full-time freelance, and all-over jobs related to working in industry-level professional positions, or in a teamwork-oriented studio setting. (This ran
Critical Assessment and Aftermath of Art School
This is an updated account on how things are going years after having left art school, the effects it's had on me, and my personal thoughts on attending. My views here aren't wholly different than the few rants I've had on the subject in the past, but it's one I believe I have to continue talking about to assist others in making the right decisions for themselves and their future path. (I should also mention that this is the viewpoint of an american in America.)
It's become increasingly clear to me over the last year that out of my 25 years on this Earth, there's only one decision I ever truly regret: and that was going to art school. Now, there's a good chance that I may not be saying this had I attended a different school, but there's no way to ever know, so what I'm really saying is "I regret going to the school I chose, not school in general." I feel as though I was let down by my school. I held up my end of the bargain (some $80~$90
LIVE character design workshop- BETAHey everyone. I'm on vacation this week, but I hope you are all having a good summer so far. I wanted to announce a new program I want to start of live internet workshops/lectures on character art/character posing. I've been thinking about this for awhile, but its very intimidating figuring out the best way to do it- SO, I'm just gonna start! I need your help though. I want to hear your comments and suggestions on what, how, when this is done. Please do two things for me: 1) Comment on my thoughts below on how this can work and what will be discussed- especially any thoughts on the tech side like Paypal and internet conferencing sites and 2) hit the LIKE button on this journal if you would seriously do this. It will give me a rough headcount of what I can expect. Super important.
Here's my initial thoughts:
About an hour and a half video conference on the subject of char
A NEW art school- a few thoughtsHey everyone. I've been thinking a lot about art schools and how we learn as artists. So much so, that I'm at the point where I think I want to start an "online art school". Why the quotation marks? Because I'm still not sure if "School" is the right word for this new website I want to create. Without giving out much information because this is all a bit early, I want to talk about the motivations and goals we're trying to address with this future site. I said "we" on purpose. I have a business partner in this and his background is in creating online education (not artistic) schools from the I.T. side of things. Thank goodness also, because I know nothing about that side of things.
I guess you could say things started when I wrote my first book, "Creating Characters with Personality". While there are many, many drawings I would love to redraw for that book, I still like that book and get great responses from it because of one thing: the viewpoint I chose on that book was to
TAD: Making It RightHere's an update about the royalties situation:
John English over at TAD stepped up and did the right thing by sending me a check for my royalties, which I have already received and banked.
He also gave me his word that he would be taking care of the other artists royalties who were wronged as well.
Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but he called me not long after I made my post wanting to know what he could do.
John said he didn't think people should get credit for doing the right thing and I agreed. But I still want to take the time to flesh this out a little because I want to keep my side of the street clean and because there's a lot of confused, angry, hurt, people.
Justified or not; dropping this nuke hurt TAD and TAD isn't only populated by the people who wronged me; it's comprised of people *just like me* trying to make a living in art.
I was wronged, but TAD isn't some cartoon villain plotting to suck the life-force from hapless artists; no one goes into business
Pointless groups."All photos accepted"
"Advertise your art"
Just because you have the ability to create a group; it doesn't mean you NEED to!
What is the point in creating a group that has no specific purpose when you're already on DevArt?!
"Oh, I'll create a group that will show any kind of photo"
Why create such a group when you can just hit "photography" on the DevArt front page?
"I'll create a group that'll display the work of anyone that wants to draw attention to their art"
Why create a group for that when it's already DevArt's PRIMARY PURPOSE?!
F**kin' morons ..
..hmmm .perhaps I didn't get enough sleep last night after all .

"Explicit Pornography"?! Aw, jeez, guys. You must have the worst collection of porn on the planet to think that was explicit.
A 90s Rochelle Swanson outing was more explicit that that pic, and that stuff got aired, uncut, on terrestrial UK TV (god bless you Channel 5, you made the young Jack jolly).
I believe that, for something to be labelled "explicit", SOMETHING must be visibly going in SOMEWHERE. Such was not the case in the offending image,

Limited Edition PrintsHi guys!
Just another quick update to let you know you can now get Limited Edition Fine Art prints from my Etsy store; http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/CharlieBowater
All prints are limited to a run of 50 each, and it's the only place you can buy hand signed and numbered prints directly from me. It's also the only place certain prints will be for sale, period.
That's all for now!
Deviantart, you're F****NG AWESOMESo I got both a DD and a Facebook feature for my LA piece yesterday, and it finally just hit me how amazing this place is. All the love and support I've gotten here is mind-boggling to me. I would even go as far as to say that it's made my career. This is where I found my "audience", my first industry connections, fellow artist friends etc. This is where I first saw Dan LuVisi's King Kong piece and stared at it in awe for hours, and then had my mind blown the day I found out that both him and Rahll (Reid Southen) knew who I was! I mean, these were guys I was idolizing like fucking movie stars, and today I consider these guys to be good friends, even though I still havne't met either of them.. (I think they're just intimidated by me sexually.) But anyway, I always knew I could draw, based on the reactions from people around me, but I also always considered myself a complete nobody. Perhaps because I was such a fucking deadbeat loser in "real life", getting fired from jobs in grocery sto
Fake itOne of the best pieces of advice I've ever received has been "fake it till ya make it." I took it to heart.
I thought I was a good artist before I was. I acted like a professional before I was. I put out my first instructional video before I started working professionally. I was working professionally when I didn't know what I was doing. I acted like an extrovert when I was an introvert. I acted like a businessperson when I hadn't made a dime. I acted like a marketer when I hadn't sold anything.

I have won with the thief! Finally! After many unpleasant situations, sleepless nights, so many nerves ... ! Remember how I wrote that someone stole my works? http://lady2.deviantart.com/journal/Art-Thief-330802073
It turned out that the persons responsible for the comprehensive regulation admitted that this theft is the same theft as any other ... Thank God!
I owe a lot to the new lawyer and my good friend - which strongly support me all the time.
It ended up that my work will be completely withdrawn from sale. A man who distributed them was obliged to pay me compensation.
So I'm very happy.
It's not just about me. It's about every artist - that can meet such a situation. You can not impersonate someone and reap the benefits of hard work ...
I hope that those of you who will have a similar problem will not give up!
